Saim Ayub Ruled Out of Pakistan Tri-Series Squad, Sahibzada Farhan Comes In

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Monday, October 26, that Pakistan’s opener, Saim Ayub, will not participate in the remaining ODI tri-series. After communicating with head coach Mike Hesson, Saim Ayub requested to quit the team in order to resume local cricket and improve his batting form. The PCB reported that the proposal had been approved by both the national selection committee and team management.

Sahibzada Farhan, a batsman, has been called up to fill the hole for the rest of the competition. Farhan has returned to the ODI lineup after being left out of Pakistan’s original tri-series selection.

Saim Ayub’s exit comes after a difficult period in the tri-series.

He was dismissed for six runs during Pakistan’s one-wicket win over England at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, contributing to a top-order collapse that placed the team in serious danger. In the end, Pakistan triumphed owing to Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 113 and an uninterrupted last-wicket stand with Haris Rauf. Prior to the game, Pakistan’s skipper, Shaheen Shah Afridi, has acknowledged the team’s selection possibilities in light of the inconsistent outcomes from the top order.

Why has Pakistan’s team undergone multiple changes throughout the tri-series?

Saim Ayub’s dismissal is Pakistan’s second important squad alteration in a short space of time. Maaz Sadaqat, a left-handed hitter, was added to the roster the day before Monday’s announcement to cover for players who had minor injuries. That move came after the PCB dismissed left-arm wrist spinner Sufiyan Moqim, citing the condition of the Lahore wickets. Sufiyan was told to return to playing domestic cricket.

Maaz, 21, was left off the original tri-series lineup. He will play alongside Farhan for the rest of the competition and is an occasional left-arm orthodox spinner.

What can Sahibzada Farhan provide Pakistan’s ODI team?

Pakistan now has a seasoned opening option at the top of the order courtesy to Farhan’s comeback to the ODI squad. Despite not being included in the original tri-series group, he was named captain of the national T20I side for the series against Sri Lanka earlier this month and captained Pakistan at the Asian Games, demonstrating his status in the white-ball hierarchy.

Pakistan has already secured a position in the tri-series final by winning three consecutive games. They will face Sri Lanka in their fifth league match on Tuesday at the Gaddafi Stadium. The final is scheduled on October 31 at the same location. Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka compete in the tri-series to prepare for the ODI World Cup the following year. Before the final, the club will be able to test out potential lineups against Sri Lanka in the league.
