Tom Banton Ready to Pause Red-Ball Cricket to Pursue England World Cup Place

Tom Banton has no regrets about abandoning red-ball cricket as he focuses on establishing himself in England’s ODI setup ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Less than eighteen months ago, after scoring 371 in a first-class match—the highest individual score in county history—the Somerset batter had emerged as a promising all-rounder. However, after considering the demands of both franchise leagues and international cricket, he agreed to sign a white-ball-only contract with Somerset in June.

Banton has returned to England’s ODI and T20I teams, guided by his close friend Harry Brook. After being provided with many franchise opportunities, the 27-year-old chose to focus on white-ball cricket and better manage his workload.

Tom Banton explained that his decision was greatly impacted by the demanding cricket schedule.

Tom Banton wishes to establish himself as a member of the England ODI squad.

Despite few appearances in the 50-over format, Banton has been a reliable member of England’s T20I squad, particularly in the middle order. After being sidelined with a knee injury, Jacob Bethell was given the opportunity to start the inning.

With four consecutive 50-plus scores and his first international century last month, the batter has made the most of the opportunity. However, he was also removed after scoring fifty runs in both of England’s losses in the current tri-series against Pakistan.

Banton still needs to establish himself as a dependable alternative at the top of the order, especially with the ODI World Cup in South Africa just a year away. With only 30 List A appearances, he has minimal experience in the format, thus he is constantly learning as he adjusts to the demands of 50-over cricket.
